SA's First WhatsApp Drama Series Starts This Month

Sanlam has launched the country’s first WhatsApp drama series. The 7-part drama was penned by former Generations head writer Bongi Ndaba.

Uk’shona Kwelanga (meaning The Sunset and also The Death of Langa) is a collaboration with scriptwriter and playwright, Bongi Ndaba and a number of South African actors.

Unlike a TV drama series, Uk'shona Kwelanga is told entirely through the medium of WhatsApp in texts, photos, voice notes, and video. It follows a family’s conversation in real-time, highlighting the drama families go through when preparing for a funeral, particularly when money is tight.

The drama features a number of well-known local actors such as Makgotso M from Isidingo, Bongani Madondo from Mtunzini and Shabangu and Thembi Mtshali from Stokvel, League of Glory and The Queen.

The plot follows the sudden and unexpected death of Bab’ Langa, which leaves the family shocked and saddened. When they set up a WhatsApp group to plan the funeral of the much-loved elder, tensions soon start to rise as they face financial pressure, family secrets and unanswered questions. Will they have enough money to give Bab’ Langa the funeral he deserves?

This is amaizing. That Sanlam has taken to a new platform to connect with their customers is impressive, but what takes the cake here is the collaboration with the scriptwriters to come up with something this original. I'm impressed.

The WhatsApp drama will launch on Monday, 5 June and will be available up until mid-July
