SABC to support the 2017 SAMAs

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) is proud to be a media partner of the 23rd edition of the South African Music Awards (SAMA's), which will take place on Saturday, 27 May at Sun City in the North West Province.

The South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) celebrate and honour artists who have made an impact in different music genres, ranging from pop and hip-hop to gospel and Afrikaans music. As South Africa’s only public service broadcaster, with five TV channels and 19 radio stations, the SABC has always provided a platform for South African music to thrive. It continues to expose audiences to new music as well as age-old classics.

The hosts for the SAMA’s include Metro FM’s morning breakfast co-host, Somizi Mhlongo and well-known comedian and host of SABC2’s Red Cake, Tumi Morake. Mhlongo is a theatre and television actor as well as a singer. He returns to the hosting duties that he delivered last year when he co-hosted with actor, radio and television host, Thando Thabethe. Morake, who is a television host and a professional in her field.

The SAMA's are the Recording Industry of South Africa's (RISA's) music industry awards, established in 1995. The winners receive a gold-plated statuette called a SAMA. The ceremony features live performances as one-off collaborations by a selection of nominees.

The SAMAs are considered the South African equivalent of the American Grammy Awards.

“Our team is hard at work putting together a ceremony befitting the stature of the SAMA awards. We have every faith in Somizi and Tumi that they will add that extra 'zing' to the proceedings and leave us entertained,” adds RISA CEO, Nhlanhla Sibisi.

SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says, “The SABC has always been a strong advocate of South African music and has a long relationship with both RISA and the SAMA's. We are very proud to be the broadcast and media partner of SAMA’s 23rd year."

He adds, "The event not only helps us deliver on our public service mandate, but also provides entertainment to our audiences. Given the reach of the SABC and its dominance of the media landscape, we have to use our resources to educate, inform, and entertain. Our involvement with the SAMA's pledges our commitment to the support, promotion, and celebration of incredibly talented artists.”

The event will be broadcast live on SABC1 at 20:00. Live Amp, SABC1’s premiere music show which occurs every Friday night, will also be doing a live broadcast on Friday, 26 May 2017 on SABC1 at 19:30.
