Following announcement in August that Zaziwa was going to change its time slot on SABC1's primetime scheduling, the channel has now decided to reverse the decision and keep the show where it is.
The music talkshow on SABC1, hosted by the delightful Pearl Modiadie, has performed well for the channel on its 19h30 timeslot on Thursday. With over 4million viewers pulled by the show, making it the highest rated "talkshow" in South Africa and Pearl Modiadie the highest rated TV host, it came as a huge surprise that the channel would meddle with a winning formula, but they tried.
The explanation for the sudden proposed change from the channel was that they needed to make space on the scheduling for new programming. Moving Zaziwa to a later slot would have given way to a new dance show on the channel called Street Cred — much o the dismay and disappointment of fans and tv critics.
There was no way to slice that cake, it was just bad. Moving to 21h00 would have meant the show would be competiting with strongly performing soapies/telenovelas such as Muvhango and The Queen thus jeopardising its ratings pull.
As good as Zaziwa is, the move would have meant come 21h00 on Thursday, viewers would have had to make a difficult choice between which show to watch... which could have left Zaziwa with a loss as some of its viewers could have had to ditch the show for the other shows.
Sanity has prevailed and now the channel has decided to keep Zaziwa on it's current timeslot.
Catch Zaziwa on SABC1, Thurdays at 19h00.
