I had an opportunity to speak to Mbau, at the press conference held at the SABC studios in Auckland Park. After congratulating her on her new show with SABC, I asked her what will the future be for the talkshow that bore her name.
Mbau told me that Katch It With Khanyi was not renewed for another season by etv. Without it being renewed she sought other opportunities and the SABC3 gig came along.
I pressed her on the fact that, moving from Katch It With Khanyi would mean leaving something that she had some ownership in behind. She was quick to inform me that her hosting gig on the SABC show with Phat Joe is not just a gig, it is also a platform for her to hone her skills as an entrepreneur in the industry.
Not only will she be hosting Weekend Edition, she will also be credited as a producer meaning that she has behind-the-scenes input and control in the show. Furthermore, with the SABC's plans to use its platform to develop local talent further with the business of making television, Mbau assured me that she is in a good place for her future plans.
Given that Katch It With Kanyi was at some point the highest rated talkshow in Mzansi and continued to be a dominant feature at the top of the ratings, many of her viewers will certainly miss the show. I'm happy to see a sista grow so hey ride on gurl!
'Weekend Things' with Khanyi and Phat Joe debuts on SABC 3 in July.
