Coke Studio Dumps Etv For SABC

This week news broke on the grapevine that etv's music reality show will not be returning to the channel for its next season.

Following the show’s success in Brazil and Pakistan, Coke Studio became an international franchise with South Africa adopting a local version. The South African version debuted its first season in August 2015 on etv.

The offered viewers a chance to see some of the best local musicians get together to create hit songs from scratch with the help of award-winning South African music producers.

Artists from different music genres will be paired up in the Coke Studio and were given three days to create great tracks, fusing different music styles.


Each episode focused on the interaction between the artists, the art of writing a song as well as the mixing, recording and performing processes.

During its run on etv the show failed to pull big numbers in terms of rating, barely cracking the top 5 reality or variety shows list. 

Word is that Soccer Zone presenter, Minnie Dlamini is on talks to host the SABC version of the show. 


Coca-Cola SA spokeswoman Zipporah Maubane reportedly confirmed to Sunday World that they were in talks with Dlamini to be the presenter and that they were also looking for a new home for Coke Studio.
"We are having discussions with a number of broadcasters. Nothing is concluded as yet, our aim is not to be exclusive as we would like to reach as many people as possible with Coke Studio. 
"Together with the Coke Studio production team we are exploring a number of possibilities to enhance the show. One of the ideas was to introduce a host to the show. It was during those discussions that screen testing of certain individuals was conducted and that included Minnie. Nothing is confirmed, we are still going through options that we have on the table," said Maubane.

No word yet as to why the show is being pulled from etv but one can deduce that the ratings may be a contributing factor. Moving it to SABC might boost the heavily sponsored show's audience pull. 

Unfortunately the move to SABC will see the show compete directly with another SABC show of a similar format, Jam Sandwich.
